HYDERABAD: French travellers Jean de Thevenot and Jean-Baptiste
Tavernier, who visited Hyderabad during the Qutub Shahi regime in the
mid 17th century, were so inspired and moved by the glory of the city
that they could not resist comparing Hyderabad with their own Paris -
right from the serene gardens to imposing palaces to pristine waters of
rivers.
The Qutub Shahis, however, did not plan Hyderabad on the Paris model. They were rather inspired by the Persian city of Isfahan. Nevertheless, a parallel can now be drawn between Paris and Hyderabad.
While Paris could succeeded in winning three UNESCO world heritage site tags for its monuments, Hyderabad, despite hosting monuments that are no inferior to those of Paris, is nowhere close to bagging the UNESCO recognition.
Paris and Hyderabad are two modern cities in contrast - the former assiduously protecting its heritage and culture and the latter bothering very little about conserving the remnants of its past glory and grandeur. There are a number of similarities between Paris and Hyderabad -Charminar vs Eiffel Tower, Salarjung Museum vs Louvres Museum, Puranapul vs Pont Neuf, Hyderabad High court vs Tribunal de grande instance de Paris, Osmania Hospital vs Paris Hospital, Charkaman vs Arc de Triomphe, St Notre Dame Paris vs Makkah Masjid among others.
But while Paris boasts of UNESCO heritage tags for the banks of River Seine along with the structures on either side, including the Eiffel Tower, Hyderabad has left the banks of River River to literally bathe is municipal, industrial, pharmaceutical, biomedical, chemical, and agricultural wastes.
